Chapter 5

Disaster Strikes!

April 4: Disaster Strikes!

Just as it seemed the hawk nest was beginning to take shape, storms struck the DFW area, with winds up to 45 mph tearing through the trees of Valley Ranch. When we went out to survey the damage next day, most of the new sticks in the hawk nest were gone. Later in the day, we saw one of the hawks standing at the ruins of the nest site. What will the hawks do now? By this time last year and the year before, Henrietta was ready to have her family.

April 13: What's Going On?

The nest (perhaps the second nest) has been abandoned. We have seen one of the hawks at the old nest site once more, but no new sticks have been added to the nest, and it clearly is not suitable to support a family. It’s beginning to look like there will be no hawk family this year.

We still frequently see the hawks in the cypress trees outside our window, but the trees have leafed out now, so we can only catch glimpses of them. Rufous continues to pick up sticks, but we have no clue where he is taking them. What in the world is going on?
